This paper describes the background to the building of the second Temple and its revival as a sacred place under the supervision of Ezra and Nehemiah. Ezra was a priest and scribe who introduced great reformations in ritual and observance and appointed judges and magistrates. Nehemiah was the civil governor. He prepared and circulated holy scriptures and established services in the synagogue. Nehemiah was a patriot and man of action and instigated the rebuilding of the City walls making Jerusalem defendable and an inhabitable city.
