On Wednesday 21st May, brethren gathered at Duke of Lancaster Lodge No.4207 in Rossendale Masonic Hall for a totally unique occasion: the Celebration of WBro William Alan Starkie’s Platinum Jubilee – marking 70 years in Freemasonry.
The morning was made even more special as in attendance were the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Robert Ian Frankl; the Very Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master, John Griffin; and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Dr Simon Archer.
The Lodge room was filled to capacity, with brethren from across the Province and beyond showing their admiration and support for a man who has given so much in his 70 years membership to the Craft. The morning featured a warm and engaging ‘armchair chat’ as the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master reflected on WBro Starkie’s incredible, very interesting and long life. In the relaxed, conversational setting, he spoke of Alan’s many achievements; family, personal and masonic – from his early initiation in Starkie Lodge in 1955, and the support he has received from his wife of 66 years Mary in his Masonic career. The Provincial Grand Master then presented him with his illuminated 70-year certificate amid warm heartfelt applause from the brethren.
One highlight of the morning was a personal tribute covering 70 years of Alan’s life both inside and outside masonry delivered by the Worshipful Master, WBro Stephen Sharp. With charm and humour, Stephen gave an in-depth and vivid picture of Alan’s life and character – stories of family life, his early years as a trainee chemist, his full-time career in the textile industry until his retirement in 1994, his National Service in the RAF, Masonic life and the fact Alan is 93 and still an active Deacon within the Lodge, were all woven together in a tribute full of warmth and affection. Alan was then paraded around the Lodge room to warm acclamation from all the brethren present.
The second highlight of the morning was the moment the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master promoted Alan to the rank of Past Grand Senior Warden to great applause from all present.
The Festive Board that followed was filled with laughter and heartfelt toasts. A lovely meal was enjoyed by all, a true celebration of a man who has always exemplified the values of Freemasonry, both in Lodge and in life. The Worshipful Master presented Alan with an engraved decanter and crystal whisky tumblers on behalf of all the brethren of the Lodge.
It is clear to see WBro Starkie’s love for Masonry, but just as clear is his love for his family. His loving marriage to Mary – his greatest supporter, who has a long tradition in Freemasonry with her father and Grandfather both being in the Craft – and his pride in their children and grandchildren.
Congratulations WBro William Alan Starkie – on 70 exceptional years.
