When people ask us what Freemasonry is all about, we often begin with the broader perspective – the good we do and the causes we support. Through established institutions like Hewlett Court and the East Lancashire Masonic Charity, we can transform our charitable aims into tangible, practical help for those who need it most. It’s heartening to know that when you contribute as a Freemason, every penny goes to where it can truly make a difference.

However, there’s so much more to Freemasonry than charitable giving. It’s also about being part of a community that shares values of integrity, respect, and kindness. There’s the satisfaction of collaborating in the lodge room, learning and delivering ritual, along with the sense of purpose that accompanies it. And of course, there’s the social aspect – from friendly chats over dinner to larger events that unite everyone.

One such occasion was the Southern Area Masters’ and First Principals’ Dinner, held on Friday, 20th June 2025 at Ashton Masonic Hall. This annual event recognises the dedication of those who have undertaken the vital role of Master or First Principal throughout the year. It’s a well-deserved moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate with friends and family.

As is tradition, attendees were joined by their wives, partners, and guests, making it not just a Masonic event but a broader celebration of support and friendship. The evening was hosted by the Southern Area Provincial Team, led by Assistant Provincial Grand Master WBro Wes Marchant, who attended with his wife Liz.

It’s easy to concentrate on the ritual and the charitable work when discussing Freemasonry – and rightly so – but evenings like this remind us of the simple pleasure of being together. Good food, good company, and great conversation. Old friends reconnecting, new friendships forming, and a room filled with laughter and cheer.

Freemasonry offers many things: purpose, tradition, and a means to give back. But it also provides something wonderfully human: the chance to share moments with like-minded people and relish life’s moments together.
