It was a chilly mid-December evening, and the brethren gathered at Manchester Hall for a special occasion.

The room was filled with warmth and anticipation as Freemasons gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone: the 50th year of WBro Garnet Harrison’s dedication to Freemasonry. The lodge hall, decorated for the occasion, reflected the reverence and camaraderie shared by all present.

The Worshipful Master WBro Evert Pieterse rose, his gavel striking the pedestal to call the assembly to order. After the opening ceremonies, the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, WBro Richard Sagar, entered the lodge, explaining that the APGM for City East, WBro Paul O’Carroll, was outside the lodge’s door with his deputation and demanded admission; the WM was more than happy to receive them.

Once admitted and salutations were given, the APGM then took the chair of King Solomon to start the joyous proceedings.

WBro Garnet Harrison was escorted to the centre of the lodge, where he was met with thunderous applause.

The APGM began with a heartfelt introduction, acknowledging the significance of this Golden Jubilee. “Fifty years of unwavering commitment to our values—integrity, friendship, respect, and service—are an extraordinary achievement,” he proclaimed. “Tonight, we honour WBro Garnet for his dedication to Freemasonry and the betterment of society.”

Amid the applause, the delegation of esteemed Masons was introduced, and the secretary expressed admiration for WBro Garnet. He recalls the minutes from the meeting of Garnet’s initiation, which took him back and reflected on the Brethren who have moved to the Grand Lodge above.

A framed poster showcasing the world as it was in 1974—the year of Garnet’s initiation—was presented. It depicted cultural and historical milestones that shaped the era, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past. This symbolic gesture was a reminder of the enduring legacy Garnet had built over decades.

The highlight of the evening was the recounting of WBro Garnet’s Masonic journey. Initiated into St George’s Lodge No. 1170 in 1974, Garnet ascended to the role of Worshipful Master in just six years. Despite a demanding professional career that led to a temporary hiatus, his love for Freemasonry drew him back, this time to Wakefield of Hythe Lodge No. 6059 in East Kent. Over the years, Garnet served in numerous roles, including Chaplain, where his wisdom and guidance touched the hearts of many.

As the APGM gave a letter from the Provincial Grand Master private to just Garnet, the room fell silent, reflecting on Garnet’s half-century of service. A beautifully crafted certificate was presented, followed by a lapel pin symbolising his Golden Jubilee which was delivered by Wbro Ed Beaman who is the City East Chairman.

A moment of light-heartedness ensued as a cheque was presented to APGM, on behalf of the Festival a token of gratitude the brethren. The hall erupted in applause as the APGM humbly accepted the gesture.

The evening concluded with a perambulation, where Garnet was led around the lodge to receive a standing ovation from his brethren and guests. The energy was electric as applause echoed through the hall, celebrating not just a man but a legacy of brotherhood, compassion, and dedication.

As the guests retired and the lodge resumed its formalities, there was an unspoken acknowledgement that WBro Garnet Harrison’s journey was a beacon of inspiration. His Golden Jubilee reminded everyone of Freemasonry’s timeless values and the profound impact one man can have over 50 years.

Then followed an amazing festive board where all who attended were treated to a hearty four-course meal, where more heartfelt toasts and tributes were given.
