On Monday 13th January, brethren gathered at Bolton Masonic Hall for a meeting of Anchor And Hope Lodge No.37, the oldest Lodge outside London, to celebrate a momentous Installation.

WBro Mark Sutherland, PDistGStwd (Hong Kong & Far East), was installed as Worshipful Master in an exemplary ceremony conducted with great dignity and style by WBro Philip Barnett, supported by a team of experienced Past Masters and dedicated Master Masons.

The Lodge was greatly honoured by the presence of the Very Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master, John Griffin, who delivered the Address to the Master in a flawless manner. Also, in attendance was WBro John Hammond, AGReg, who travelled from London as a personal guest of the new Master.

WBro Sutherland appointed and invested a full team of Officers, all of whom were present on the night, underlining the strength and commitment within the Lodge. The Address to the Wardens was delivered by WBro David Hawkins while the Address to the Brethren was given by WBro Geoff Ashton.

In total, 44 brethren attended this special evening – comprising 23 members, 1 honorary member, and 20 visitors, creating a warm and vibrant atmosphere.

During his remarks, WBro Sutherland reflected movingly on his Masonic journey:

“I am very proud to have been installed as Master of this very ancient and fine Lodge. Many of you may not know that I was initiated in Anchor and Hope Lodge No.37 on 7th March 1994, some 31 years ago. On that equally cold evening, I shall never forget the moment when I entered this very Lodge Room to be met by my father who escorted me as Junior Deacon through the Ceremony of my Initiation. My father will be immensely proud of my Installation this evening and I know that he will be overseeing the proceedings with grace and raising a glass charged with heavenly blessings sent from the Grand Lodge Above.”

The celebrations continued at the Festive Board, where 41 brethren enjoyed good food, warm company, and the spirited rendition of the Master’s Song, enthusiastically led by WBro Philip Collier.

The Lodge now looks forward to a vibrant year under the leadership of WBro Sutherland, whose heartfelt connection to the Lodge and long-standing service promises a memorable and meaningful tenure.

Congratulations to WBro Sutherland on his installation – we wish him a fulfilling and successful year in the Chair!
