On Thursday 15th May, the members of Anchor and Hope Lodge No.37 gathered at Bolton Masonic Hall to celebrate an extraordinary achievement – the 50th anniversary in Freemasonry of WBro John Welsby. The evening marked a significant moment in the life of the Lodge by honouring a brother who has dedicated half a century to the Craft.

In attendance was the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Dr Simon Archer, alongside a delegation of Grand Officers and members of the Western Area team. Their presence underscored the respect and affection WBro Welsby has earned over the years, not just within his Lodge but across the wider Masonic community.

The tribute in the Lodge room was a truly special part of the evening. Delivered with warmth and humour by his brother, Frank, the address celebrated John’s long and distinguished Masonic career. With personal reflections and amusing anecdotes, the tribute captured the affection in which John is held and brought much joy and laughter to the assembled brethren. It was a light-hearted yet deeply meaningful tribute, celebrating not only his Masonic accomplishments but also the bonds of brotherhood that have shaped his journey.

Adding further historical interest to the evening, the Worshipful Master, Mark Sutherland, offered a fascinating insight into the Welsby family’s deep Masonic roots. His “nugget” about the brothers’ Masonic family tree highlighted the generational legacy that continues to enrich the Lodge and inspire its members.

The celebration continued into the social board, which was lively, well-attended, and filled with camaraderie. Brethren enjoyed a festive meal and raised their glasses in honour of WBro Welsby’s Golden Jubilee. Adding to the joyful spirit of the evening, the Lodge also celebrated a landmark birthday of the Worshipful Master, giving the brethren even more reason to share in cheer and goodwill.

WBro John Welsby’s 50 years of committed service, good humour, and brotherly love serve as a shining example to all Freemasons. The evening was a fitting tribute to his enduring contributions and a reminder of the lasting impact that one dedicated Mason can have on a Lodge, a Province, and generations of brethren.
