Who Are We?

The Shakspere Lodge No 1009 was consecrated on 23rd April 1864. The Lodge is the Daughter Lodge of Caledonian 204, and the ‘twin sister’ Lodge of Robert Burns No 999. Both Shakspere Lodge and Robert Burns Lodge being consecrated at the same time, in a double ceremony, they are believed to be the only twin sister Lodges ever consecrated. It wouldn’t be fanciful to suppose that one set of founders were being true to their Scottish Caledonian heritage and naming their Lodge after the Scottish Bard. Shakspere simply named their lodge after the English poet. But this is no better than guesswork – we do not know. In any case, The consecration date to be William Shakespeare’s birthday seems to be entirely coincidental! The unusual spelling of Shakspere is often subject to some light-hearted debate. The bard signed his name several different ways throughout his life, but the only a signature that was s ever witnessed was the one on his will – where he signed it “Shakspere”.
