On Friday 4th April, brethren gathered at Pythagoras Lodge Of Installed Masters No.9248 in Bury Masonic Hall for a very special occasion: the celebration of WBro Philip Mountford’s Golden Jubilee – marking 50 remarkable years in Freemasonry.

The evening was made even more special as in attendance were the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Robert Ian Frankl; the Very Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master, John Griffin; and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Dr Simon Archer.

The Lodge room was filled to capacity, with brethren from across the Province and beyond showing their admiration and support for a man who has given so much to the Craft.

The evening featured a warm and engaging ‘armchair moment’ as the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master reflected on WBro Mountford’s incredible Masonic journey. In a relaxed, conversational setting, he spoke of Phil’s many achievements – from his early initiation to his key leadership roles, including District Chairman and later Assistant Provincial Grand Master for the Western Area. He praised Phil’s unwavering dedication, presenting him with his illuminated 50-year certificate amid heartfelt applause from the brethren.

A highlight of the evening was a deeply personal tribute delivered by WBro Jeremy Aston, a close friend of Phil’s for over 40 years. With charm and humour, Jeremy painted a vivid picture of Phil’s life and character – recalling his boundless enthusiasm (often compared to Tigger from Winnie the Pooh), his sharp wit, and his natural ability to lead and support those around him. Stories of family life, professional success, and Masonic service were all woven together in a tribute full of warmth and affection.

From his career with the North West Electricity Board and United Utilities, to his retirement adventures in Spain, to his countless hours of service to the former Bury District and the Province at large, Phil’s story is one of consistent commitment, reliability, and good humour.

The Festive Board that followed was a jubilant affair – filled with laughter and heartfelt toasts. Excellent food and drink were enjoyed by all, and the stories shared ranged from the hilarious to the heartwarming. It was a true celebration of a man who has always exemplified the values of Freemasonry, both in Lodge and in life.

WBro Mountford’s love for the Craft is clear, but just as clear is his love for his family. His loving marriage to Josie – his greatest supporter – and his pride in their children and grandchildren were acknowledged repeatedly during the evening. It was evident to all that his Masonic journey has always gone hand-in-hand with a life filled with love and loyalty.

It was also pleasing to note that the Lodge itself is thriving – with 16 joining members and several more proposals due to be considered at the next meeting. A strong and healthy Lodge, inspired by leaders like Phil, is perhaps the greatest tribute of all.

Congratulations, WBro Philip Mountford – on 50 exceptional years. May the years ahead bring you as much joy as you’ve brought to others.
