As has become a cherished tradition on the first Sunday in December, freemasons from the Southern area gathered to hold their annual Carol service. This year, the event was hosted at the Audenshaw Masonic Hall, a venue well-suited to such a significant occasion. The service was led by WBro Revd. Canon Richard Hawkins, whose thoughtful guidance added a spiritual depth to the proceedings. The evening programme included five well-loved Carols, interspersed with twelve meaningful readings, creating a reflective yet festive atmosphere.

The service saw a remarkable turnout, with many brethren attending in the company of their families and guests, making it a true community affair. This organisation, composed of Senior Citizens with Masonic ties, their wives, widows, and close relatives or friends, has long been a cornerstone of local social life. The fellowship was well represented on the evening, underscoring the inclusive spirit of the event.

WBro Don Roberts, president of the Audenshaw Masonic Fellowship, was a pivotal figure in organising this annual gathering for many years. This year, as in previous ones, Don attended with a large contingent of his family, adding a personal and heartwarming dimension to the evening. Among his family members was his great-granddaughter, Eliana, who contributed to the service by delivering one of the readings—a highlight that delighted attendees and epitomised the multi-generational appeal of the occasion.

As befitting the season, the event was imbued with a warm, familial atmosphere, which added to its overall success. A traditional Christmas dinner was served, offering attendees a hearty and festive meal that perfectly complemented the earlier service. The gathering was further enriched by the presence of the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, WBro Wes Marchant, who addressed those assembled with a message of gratitude and encouragement.

At the conclusion of the evening, WBro Marchant was pleased to announce that those in attendance had raised an impressive sum of £360. These funds were directed towards the Crisis at Christmas charity appeal, a vital cause providing meals, shelter, support, and companionship to homeless individuals during the festive season. This act of generosity provided a fitting end to an evening that was as much about giving as it was about celebration, embodying the true spirit of Christmas.
