Did you know that the Lodge of St John No.191 in Bury has its own thriving Golf Society?
Formed in 2007 by members of the Lodge who described themselves as golfers – or more accurately, social golfers – the 191 Golf Society was born out of a desire to foster fellowship, enjoy the great game of golf, and raise money for charity. Since its inception, the Society has donated over £7,500 to various causes, both Masonic and non-Masonic.
Playing six games a year across golf courses in Bury, Bolton, and the wider area, the Society operates a simple and effective charitable model: a small £2 levy is added to each day’s golf, and funds are further boosted through an annual dinner or lunch and raffle. The proceeds are split between a charity of the Captain’s choosing and the Lodge’s own Charity Account.
Each season runs from April to September, with days typically starting with coffee and bacon sandwiches, teeing off at around 11:00am, and wrapping up with a friendly prize presentation and social drink. The cost per game is modest – usually £20 to £35, depending on the venue.
Importantly, membership is open to everyone. Over half of the current members are non-Masons, and the Society welcomes all golfers – whether you’re a seasoned player or someone looking to dust off their clubs and enjoy a good laugh. In fact, the Society prides itself on a unique handicap system that seems to give the “average golfer” a fair shot! You’ll spot members easily on the course these days, thanks to their eye-catching, newly designed golf shirts – a true sight to behold!
