With International Women’s Day on March 8th as our inspiration, we want to praise all the ladies of East Lacashire who demonstrate their commitment to charity and Freemasonry’s values.

In the heart of East Lancashire, where the bonds of fraternity run deep, the women of East Lancashire Freemasons have been making an extraordinary impact in support of broader charity and the 2026 East Lancashire Festival.

United by a shared goal, the women—including the women who dedicate their time to working for the province, spouses, partners, relatives, and supporters of Freemasonry—came together with passion and determination. They understood the significance of the Festival’s objectives and were keen to contribute meaningfully. What followed was a series of innovative and heartfelt initiatives that captured the spirit of unity and philanthropy.

Starting in 2019, Rachel Cookson overcame her fear of heights and dared to take to the skies in a remarkable feat of bravery. She completed a  “Charity 15,000-foot skydive” in aid of the East Lancashire Masonic Charity.

One of the flagship events was the “Festival Zipline,” which saw Julie Ward (ELMC Operations Director) and Beverley Schofield (Hewlett Court Manager) and her daughter flying through the scenic landscapes of North Wales. They overcame their fears and gathered pledges and sponsorships from Brethren, friends, and the wider community. Their journey symbolised both a physical and metaphorical path towards progress, embodying the resilience and dedication of women in Freemasonry.

A dazzling Ladies’ “Catwalk Show” was held at Hewlett Court and contributed to the fundraising efforts. The event, a mix of elegance and entertainment, featured inspiring guest speakers and performances from talented local artists. Every ticket sold and every bid placed contributed to the Festival fund, proving that generosity and celebration could go hand in hand.

The younger generation also played a crucial role. Racchel Cookson and her team organised a “Pop up Shop” initiative, selling pre-loved garments and holding a funday at Hewlett Court. Their enthusiasm raised funds and strengthened the intergenerational connections within the Masonic family.

Lets also not forget the countless “Sponsored Walks” that the team at Hewlett Court not only participate in, but also help to organise and without them it would be pretty dificult to pull off so effortlessly.

The women harnessed the digital space to spread awareness, and are launching a campaign titled “Women of East Lancs – Stronger Together”. There aim is to reach supporters far and wide through engaging storytelling, video messages, and live fundraising challenges, encouraging participation and contributions from beyond the province.

As International Women’s Day arrived, their efforts culminated in a grand donation ceremony, where they proudly presented the funds they had raised to the festival committee. The moment was a testament to their hard work and a celebration of women’s role in the Masonic community and beyond.

Their success was more than financial—it was a statement. It highlighted the power of inclusion, the strength of unity, and the unwavering generosity that defines the Masonic spirit. As the 2026 East Lancashire Festival continues, the legacy of these remarkable women will serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations.

Together, they made a difference. Together, they shaped history.
