What began as a personal health challenge quickly became something far bigger.

Earlier this year, Jeremy Aston committed to walking 60 miles during November in support of Prostate Cancer Research. Not a seasoned walker by his own admission, the challenge was initially about personal wellbeing. However, following encouragement from family and friends, a JustGiving page was set up — with a modest target of £150.

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

Support came thick and fast, and the original target was quickly surpassed. Then £500. Then £1,000. Then £1,500. And still the donations continued. Currently the fundraising page stands at an incredible £3,000, with a further £319 in Gift Aid, thanks to the generosity of many supporters and one particularly generous anonymous donor who helped take the total to its current figure.

While the walking challenge itself was a success, the reason behind it is far more important. Jeremy has been undergoing treatment for high-risk prostate cancer and is now firmly on the road to recovery. His message throughout has been clear: this campaign was not about sympathy, but about influence — influencing awareness, early testing, and ultimately saving lives.

Early detection through PSA testing was critical in his case. A delay of just six months could have meant the difference between a cancer that was curable and one that was only treatable. Sadly, over 12,000 men die each year from prostate cancer, often because it is detected too late.

Jeremy has also spoken movingly of the care and professionalism shown by NHS staff at every level, from consultants to support staff, radiologists, Macmillan nurses, and those providing information and guidance throughout treatment. With only a small number of radiotherapy sessions remaining and ongoing hormone therapy ahead, he remains positive and focused on a full recovery.

His closing message is one worth repeating:

Gents — don’t hesitate to have a PSA test. It could be life-changing.

This effort stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when determination, honesty, and generosity come together — and of the importance of looking after our health, and each other.
