On Friday, the 22nd of November 2024, Members of Cornucopia Lodge, joined by the City East Area APGM Paul O’Carroll, assisted by an area deputation and family and friends of William (Bill), all joined together to celebrate Bill’s Golden Masonic Anniversary.
There were tributes from the City East APGM Paul O’Carroll, who recapped everything that happened in 1974, including the price of a pint, which was 22p. Roy Chapman, the current Director of ceremonies from Cornucopia Lodge 4553 and one of Bill’s closest masonic friends, gave a moving tribute.
Who is Bill?
William Bell stands as a beacon of dedication and Masonic spirit in the grand rooms of Manchester Hall, Cornucopia Lodge No. 4553, where the warmth of fellowship echoes through the years. On the 22nd of November, 1974, William took his first steps into Freemasonry, embracing its principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Over the next fifty years, his journey became a tapestry woven with commitment, service, and a profound love for the Craft.
The Path to Mastery
William’s Masonic career blossomed quickly. By 1982, he had ascended to Worshipful Master of Cornucopia Lodge, guiding his brethren with wisdom and humility. But leadership was only the beginning. For 24 years, he served diligently as the Lodge Secretary, ensuring its smooth operation while taking on Treasurer, Almoner, and Chaplain roles. His tireless dedication earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow Masons.
In 2006, his Masonic journey expanded when he joined Charity Lodge No. 2651 in the Province of West Lancashire. Here, too, he served with distinction, holding the offices of Junior and Senior Warden. These roles deepened his connection to the broader Masonic community, showcasing his unyielding commitment.
A Royal Arch Companion
William’s Masonic pursuits were not confined to the Craft alone. In 1983, he was exalted into Cornucopia Chapter No. 4553, where he reached the pinnacle of leadership as 1st Principal in 2002. His nine-year tenure as Scribe Ezra cemented his reputation as a cornerstone of the Chapter. Later, his membership in the Gilbert Greenall Chapter brought new opportunities to build friendships and uphold the traditions of the Royal Arch.
Honours and Recognition
William’s extraordinary service did not go unnoticed. His Provincial appointments began in 1993 with PProvAGSuptWks, culminating in the prestigious rank of PProvSGW in 2023. His Royal Arch accomplishments were equally remarkable, with appointments such as PProvGStdBr and the esteemed rank of PProvGSoj in 2018.
Each honour reflected his unwavering dedication to his Lodges, Chapters, and the Masonic Provinces he served. His achievements inspired those around him, a testament to the rewards of perseverance and loyalty.
A Life Beyond the Lodge
Outside the Lodge, William’s life was no less remarkable. Initially seconded to Warrington for what he thought would be six weeks, his stay turned into six decades. He became an entrepreneur, transitioning from architecture to owning construction companies and other ventures. His work took him from Shaw in Oldham to the sands of Dubai and an island off the coast of Saudi Arabia.
William also had a passion for sports. A lifelong rugby league fan, he cheered for the Warrington Wolves, idolising the legendary Brian Bevan. Football was another love, with George Best as an early hero during his Manchester United days. Yet, his loyalty eventually shifted to Manchester City, an allegiance that led to memorable moments, including an encounter with Malcolm Allison.
A Masonic Legacy
Freemasonry ran deep in William’s family. His father was a Mason, his son followed in his footsteps, and soon, his grandson would be initiated into Cornucopia Lodge. This continuity filled him with immense pride, a living testament to the enduring values of the Craft.
One story William often shared was of his visit to a Dublin Lodge. Amid the diversity of faiths and backgrounds, the brethren sang the English national anthem at the social board. For William, this moment captured the essence of Freemasonry: a fraternity that transcends political and religious divides to forge bonds of brotherhood.
A Celebrated Milestone
As William celebrated fifty years in Freemasonry, the gratitude of his brethren was evident. His contributions to the Lodges, Chapters, and Provinces were unmatched, and his legacy was unwavering service and inspiration. For William Bell, Freemasonry was more than a journey—a way of life, a family tradition, and a source of lifelong friendships and fulfilment.
