On Wednesday 11th June, the Quarterly Communication of the United Grand Lodge of England took place at Freemasons’ Hall, London, and was well attended by brethren from across the Constitution — including a contingent from the Western Area.

The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Robert Ian Frankl, along with the Very Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master, John Griffin, and several Assistant Provincial Grand Master’s, represented the Province with distinction. They were joined by a strong turnout from the members of the East Lancashire Level Club (ELLC) Western Area who travelled down together to attend.

For many, it was their first experience of Grand Lodge. The trip offered a chance to witness the ceremonial grandeur of the Grand Temple, connect with brethren from across the country, and feel part of the wider Masonic journey. The sense of camaraderie and excitement among the group was palpable — a powerful reminder of what the Level Club is all about.

During the meeting, the Most Worshipful Pro-Grand Master, Jonathan Spence, reflected on the success of the recent Light Blues Communication, which welcomed over 1,600 newer Freemasons to Grand Lodge for a special event tailored to their stage in the Craft. He praised it as a clear example of the “Yes, if” mindset that underpins UGLE’s Membership Strategy — a call to innovate, engage, and grow.

He also shared encouraging news: since the launch of the Strategy, membership losses have halved, and UGLE is now on the brink of net membership growth — a first in decades. But he stressed that progress relies on every Lodge, and every Mason, playing their part in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining members.

The day was a memorable one for all in attendance, especially our Western Area Light Blues, who left inspired and energised. If you’ve never attended a Quarterly Communication, keep an eye out — another group visit is already in the works.
