On Friday 17th October, the East Lancashire Uniformed Services Lodge No.8249 held a memorable evening of remembrance, reflecting on the close ties between Freemasonry and the Armed Forces. The highlight of the evening was the handover of a wreath to the Widows Sons Chapter, honouring the sacrifices made by Freemasons in service to their country.
In attendance was the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Dr Simon Archer, alongside WBro Andrew Procter, who is responsible for Armed Forces related matters in the Province. WBro Procter handed the wreath to WBro Bill Bruce, President of the Widows Sons Chapter, in a brief but moving ceremony that embodied respect, loyalty, and the spirit of fraternity.
Members also enjoyed an informative and engaging presentation by WBro Paul Smillie on the Victoria Cross, exploring its history and its links to Freemasonry. The presentation gave everyone present a deeper understanding of the courage and dedication recognised by this highest of awards, and the significance of the wreath handover.
The evening provided a fitting opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served, while celebrating the strong bonds of fellowship and respect within the Province.

WBro Bruce has since transported the wreath to the National Memorial Arboretum on behalf of the Province Of East Lancashire, alongside the presidents of the other Chapters who carried the wreaths for their respective Provincial Grand Masters. At the Arboretum, the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Robert Frankl, laid the wreath on behalf of the Province at the Masonic Memorial Garden during the National Freemasons Service of Remembrance on the 1st November.
