On Saturday 26th August 2017 at Winfields Outdoors Store, Hazel Mill, Haslingden, East Ribble District volunteers were once again out in full force. WBro Gordon Cornthwaite had been approached by Chris Gibson, Events Manager of Winfields, after volunteering at the Starlight Walk, to see if East Ribble Freemasons could assist in helping at an event he was organising. It was to be a music event in memory of Olivia Campbell-Hardy age 15, who sadly lost her life at the Manchester Arena in May. The proceeds would be donated to Olivia’s school, Tottington High School to purchase musical instruments. The request was put to the District Charity Steward who agreed immediately. The call went out for volunteers at a time when masonry is least on our minds, the middle of the recess. The response was amazing and we were looking for nine volunteers. Fourteen volunteers turned out on the day including the four ladies who also came along to offer their support, many thanks. We were also grateful to the volunteers we had in reserve.
A quick briefing with Chris let the volunteers know what was required. They were tasked to sell wrist bands on the gate, operate a one-way system and sorting the car parking and manning the provincial trailer. The day started at 10.30 a.m. with a procession of motor bikes and scooters setting off from the Tesco car park Haslingden and arriving at 11.00 a.m. These had to be parked up quickly so they didn’t block the road which was a major feat of logistics in itself as there were well over a hundred. There were prizes for the best bikes and after this the music started with many bands and dance troupes throughout the day. Alongside the main entertainment, there was activities for the children including face-painting and rides. As the day went on we were fed with bacon barmcakes and some lovely meat pies (thanks to WBro Cornthwaite) with plenty of brews from our Assistant District Chairman, WBro Dave McGurty. Many Masons turned up on the day including WBro John Farrington APGM and WBro David Lightbown our District Chairman. It was great to see everyone and thank you for your support.
The good weather helped everyone to enjoy themselves, particularly the volunteers who were spread about the Mill, and finally got back to the provincial trailer and found it was next the beer tent! Once again a very big thank you to all who helped on the day and everyone who offered their assistance.
